I spent the day taking pictures at Conrail's Corporate headquarters in Philadelphia, PA a few days before merger. Here are a few shots from that day. Goodbye Conrail! I'll remember you both trackside and inside!
This is a painting outside Conrail's board room on the 17th floor. The painter obviously wasn't a railfan, as the distorted look of the C40-8W shows!
The view from the 26th floor. I would of loved this office! This office was vacant and we had lunch there. The person who had this office was now viewing palm trees in Jacksonville, Florida.(Works for CSX now) The station is 30th street station now used by Amtrak, NJT and Septa. The tracks that are seen are Septa tracks used for commuters. Amtrak's Northeast Corridor runs left to right and is under the station.
The infamous Conrail blue room hard at work. Corporate is dead, but it's business as usual in the blueroom! Motive power is assigned here systemwide. Trains need to keep running!
A motive power screen from the Chicage line.
This about wraps up the atmosphere at Conrail Corporate days before merger. Empty hallways, empty offices. People have either left for Norfolk, Atlanta or Jacksonville or are on 8 hour lunches.
The power board. Look closely, Conrail has 9 more units off the system then they have from foreign carriers! This board is updated daily. Lots of cool info on this board. Check out the date. 10 days till merger! Conrail was a well oiled machine. Trains ran on time and the power was well maintained.
What was seen coming off the elavator on the 14th floor in corporate. So many good dept's! Which dept should we visit first?
